Camera accessories are essential for both amateur and professional photographers though at different extents. Accessories used by amateurs are restricted to batteries, flashes, power adapters, filters, lens protectors, and memory cards for digital storage. A professional in addition to these would need lighting equipments, tripods, cable releases, eyepieces, light meters, and camera bags and cases. Professional photography is an equipment intensive activity and requires through knowledge about the subject.

Batteries and power Adapters – Digital Cameras make use of rechargeable lithium ion batteries which are rated mAh (milli ampere hours). Nickel cadmium batteries could also be use, but these are heavier and result in memory losses. These batteries could be charged by adapters manufactured by several companies. Chargers and power supplies are dependent on camera models and are brand-wise exclusive.

Flashes – Flashes are mandatory add-ons while photographing indoors or in reduced natural light. Simple cameras have flashes built in and are usually suitable for small range indoors photo capturing. Advanced cameras require add-on flashes for limited light photography. Both digital and Film cameras need this attachment which could either be fixed directly on to the body of The Camera or attached by cables. These flashes are selectively make and are compatible with one particular brand. For instance a Nikon flash would only work with a Nikon Slr Film Camera or Nokia digital cameras. It is similar for Sony, Canon, Vivitar, Olympus and so on. Certain flash attachments are remotely operable.

Filters and lens Protectors – Filters are used over camera lenses for image clarity and special effects. These are ultra violet (UV) filters and also protect camera lenses against dust and scratches. A polarizing lens filter is used to remove glare emanating from metallic or shiny surfaces. When not in use a camera lens is covered by a lens cap or protector to prevent dust from accumulating.

Memory cards – Memory cards are vital Digital Camera accessories. These are used to store images and used for taking print outs. These could be stored separately and does not need power backup while storing. These cards are usually available is capacities of 8GB and 16GB.

Lighting equipments – These are specially required for professional photography. Strobe lights, adjustable video lights, and pocket LED lights are different forms of illumination used in photography. Strobe lights are flash triggered and are extensively used in indoor photography. Adjustable video lights could be brightened or dimmed as per necessity. Pocket LEDs are used to produce daylight condition indoors. For diffused lighting umbrellas are used over these lights. Using of umbrella also prevent shadow formation which is a major drawback of photography under artificial lights.

Tripod accessories – Tripods are used by photographers to place cameras in a stationary position. These are designed with several features making camera handling convenient. There are tripods with adjustable heights, rotating platform, rubber feet, and leg spikes. Carbon fiber or metals are used for making these tripods.

Light meters – These is an essential item in the kit of professional photographers. This determines the illumination of a place and accordingly helps the photographer to make appropriate light arrangements. Exposure time of cameras is also determined as per readings of light meter.
