Popular Arab Film Festivals

While Arab movies are not common in the Western countries, they are very much cherished among those who follow them. As an appreciation towards such movies, there are a number of Arab film festivals. Here are a number of common ones.

The Arab Film Festival is a movie festival that is annually held in San Francisco in the US. The aim of the festival is actually to open the eyes of the Americans of how the Arab culture is truly like, beyond the representations made by the American mass media that has caused a stereotypical image of the culture altogether. Each year audiences will watch the latest films of the year, like in 2010, they get Arabic movies 2010, showing that the Arab is indeed active in the Film Industry.

The Biennale of Arab Cinemas is held every other year in Paris since 1992. This festival aims to gather works of Arab film-makers, including features, short films and documentaries. With the festival held at Paris, the French and Europeans are given the opportunity to see what Arab films are like and learn a bit of the culture beyond what they see in the news.

The Cairo International Film Festival is an annual event that has been around since 1976, and is held at Cairo, Egypt. It was actually the very first film festival ever made in the Middle East, and aims to appreciate and award deserving Egyptian and internationally renowned films, actors, actresses and directors.

The Carthage Film Festival was established by the Tunisian Ministry of Culture in 1966, to showcase films from Maghreb, Africa, and the Middle East. It is a biannual event that alternates with the Damascus International Film Festival, which is a film festival hosted by the Syrian government since 1979, that focuses on Arab, Latin American, and Asian films.

The Marrakech International Film Festival is a film festival that is annually held at Marrakech, Morocco since 2001. Where appreciation for Moroccan films is concerned, this festival is by far the largest festival to honor such films. During the festival, feature films and short films of Moroccan production is honored, as well as the deserving actors, actresses, and directors.

The Dubai International Film Festival is an annual event that was established in 2004 by the Dubai Media City. The aim of this event is to showcase contemporary and classic global cinema.

Last but not least would be the Mid East Film Festival, which is held in Beirut, Lebanon. Established in 1997, the aim of this event is to put the spot light on young talents from Lebanon and the Middle East as a show of support. The festival also aims to encourage co-production between the Arab and the international scene. All in all, Arab is filled with many creative minds that have made the celebration of them a deserving one. With a new decade starting with Arabic movies 2010, there are lots more that are expected to awe their audiences.
