Filmmaking

Im 15 and have a passion for filmmaking and need a new 24p camera. what should I get?
I love filmmaking, and my old crappy dvd camera broke so im looking to buy a New Camera. Im a student so I only have a budget of about $2000 and thats pushing it already. I really need a 24p camera (records at 24 frames/second) right now because I am applying to interlochen center of the arts, and it needs a portoflio
My advice would be to rent the equipment to make the portfolio. You do not want to send a cheap looking video to Interlochen. Once you get into Interlochen they have the equipment for you to learn on so you will not need to own it at that time. When you finish the course you will be in a better position to buy a better camera and/or go to work for a company that has better equipment. In fact, if you get into Interlochen send me an email, I own a production company not far from there and some times look for people that want to learn the business by assisting with productions. Good luck!

In these fifty entertaining, illuminating short essays, Reilly invites you to join him on the film set. What is it like to shoot a love scene? How do you do a full body burn? What is it like to film in the Everglades or in a morgue? What is blocking or matching, and how long should a script be? How do you decide when to build a set? Why is the color palette so critical? Is night shooting worth the suffering? The Big Picture delivers the surprising answers to these and other fascinating questions about what it takes to make a feature film, offering a glimpse into what itÂ’s like when the lights are bright, the camera is rolling, and the moviemakers are calling the shots. |

Intruder in the Dust (Remastered) $19.95 Who shot Vinson Gowrie in the back? The jailhouse at Jefferson, Mississippi, may not hold the actual killer, but it does have the suspect an angry lynch mob wants: Lucas Beauchamp, who has long refused to exhibit the obsequious attitude expected of black people in Jefferson. Based on William Faulkner’s novel and filmed in his hometown of Oxford, Intruder in the Dust is both a gripping whodunit and a milestone of social-conscience filmmaking. Claude Jarman, Jr. (reunited with director Clarence Brown of The Yearling) plays the youth whose troubled sense of right makes him a catalyst in solving the mystery. And Juano Hernandez is memorable as Lucas: proud, perceptive, strong – words that also describe this superb film named one of 1949’s 10 Best by the National Board of Review. |

Mayor of Hell (1933) (DVD) $18.95 You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours. Politicos award gangster Patsy Gargan a cushy job as a honcho at a woefully run boys reform school. No experience necessary. No expectations. No problems. But firebrand Patsy (James Cagney) runs up against plenty of problems in this impassioned Depression-era mix of social conscience filmmaking and the gangster genre. He sees something in the kids – himself. He, too, was raised in the slums. And he decides to defy everyone to give the kids opportunities he never had. Yet all the good Patsy does could collapse when he missteps into his life of crime. This punchy tale was retold in films featuring the Dead End Kids: Crime School (with Humphrey Bogart) and Hell’s Kitchen. |

Lady Killer (1933) (DVD) $18.95 His picture is on magazine covers, his name in lights. Ex-con artist Dan Quigley is “doing all right in this movie racket, a big man in Hollywood. But if his criminal past resurfaces, he could end up in the Big House. James Cagney is pulse-quickening Quigley in this pre-Hays Code romp described in its day by the New York Evening Post as “a kind of resume of everything Cagney has done to date in the movies. By turns, Lady Killer is a filmmaking spoof, a crime thriller, a character study. And with Cagney’s vitality out front, it’s enormously greater than the sum of its parts. The likable cast includes Mae Clarke, famously grapefruited by Cagney in The Public Enemy and destined for a notorious donnybrook here. |

The smoke clears and a disparate group of human beings caught in the blast finds itself aboard a luxury liner headed…who knows where. They soon learn their one-way tickets are stamped Heaven. And Hell. A dose of World War II realism puts a gritty edge on this retelling of the early Talkie Outward Bound (starring Leslie Howard) that loses none of the prior version’s ethereal power. A stellar cast – John Garfield, Paul Henried, Sydney Greenstreet, Eleanor Parker, Edmund Gwenn and more names evocative of a remarkable filmmaking era – bring their considerable talents to a tale of passengers who discover their true natures as they discover their destinations. |

Hamlet (Includes Blu-ray Book) $27.95 “Hamlet has the kind of power, energy and excitement that movies can truly exploit, actor/director Kenneth Branagh says. In this first full-text film of William Shakespeare’s play – shot on 65mm film and exhibited in Panavision Super 70, power surges through every scene. The timeless tale of murder, corruption and revenge is reset in a lavish 19th-century world, using sprawling Blenheim Palace as Elsinore and staging mich of the action in mirrored, gold-filled interiors. A landmark cast (Julie Christie, Kate Winslet, Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, Charlton Heston and more), the excitement of the Bard’s words and an energetic filmmaking style lift the story from its often shadowy ambience to fully-lit pageantry and rage. |

Bodyguard (DVD) $19.95 Soon after L.A. police detective Mike Carter is bounced from the force, the officer who fired him is found dead. Suspect #1: Mike Carter. While the police dragnet draws tighter, Carter scrambles to clear his name, connecting the dots involving Pasadena bluebloods, the meat-packing industry and cop corruption. As Carter, noir icon Lawrence Tierney (Dillinger, Reservoir Dogs) brings grim toughness to this atmospheric whodunit that marks the genre debut of another film noir notable, director Richard O. Fleischer (Armored Car Robbery, The Narrow Margin). A filmmaking legend of even greater renown was in the wings. Robert Altman of M*A*S*H, Nashville and Gosford Park receives his first credit (as story co-writer Robert B. Altman). |

Shining Hour, The (DVD) $19.95 When Joan Crawford saw The Shining Hour on stage, she pleaded with the studio to let her spread her acting wings in the film version. She got her wish, playing a New York siren who marries a prosperous farmer (Melvyn Douglas) and moves to Wisconsin. There she is drawn to his handsome brother (Robert Young), even as she befriends the brother’s selfless wife (Margaret Sullavan, Crawford’s choice for the role). The passionate triangle plays out in the best tradition of classic screen melodrama: glossy and chic, but resonant with honest emotion. And the movie’s heart-stopping climax with Crawford battling flames to rescue Sullavan from certain death in a house fire is, both literally and figuratively, incendiary filmmaking. |

|
Fury (DVD) $18.95 Joe Wilson, a wrongly jailed man thought to have died in a blaze started by a bloodthirsty lynch mob, is somehow alive. And dead to all he ever stood for and perhaps ever will be. Because Joe aims to ensure his would-be executioners meet the fate Joe miraculously escaped. Spencer Tracy is Joe, Sylvia Sidney is his bride-to-be and Fury lives up to its volatile name with its searing indictment of mob justice and lynching. In his first American film, director Fritz Lang (Metropolis, The Big Heat) combines a passion for justice and a sharp visual style into a landmark of social-conscience filmmaking. In the 49 years before this movie’s release, some 6,000 people in the U.S. were victims of lynch mobs. The Fury over those tragedies – and over other injustices to come – remains. |

Not even murder will stop these sassy sleuths. “Married love or illicit: which does the modern girl prefer? the studio’s ad for Illicit asks. Cracking Up (DVD) $19.95 Cracking Up is a crazy quilt of sight gags, one-liners, caricatures, slapstick and quirky vocal mannerisms. In short, it’s marvelous mayhem of the kind which has gained Jerry Lewis admirers the world over. Lewis plays a hapless misfit who seeks psychiatric help after bumbling a suicide attempt. His shrink sessions reveal a flashback history about a klutzy childhood and a family history of (what else?) ineptitude, affording Lewis to play a smorgasbord of roles, including a 6-year-old boy, a 15th-century coachman, a good-ol’-boy sheriff and a bearded guru. The wackiness soars to new heights when our nutcase patient takes a transcontinental flight on the cheapest airline he can find. But there’s no scrimping on the laughter. Cracking Up is zany proof that nobody does funny making filmmaking better than Lewis. |

Son of the Gods (1930) (DVD) $19.95 The clash of East and West, of tolerance and bigotry, of man and woman play out in this vivid early Talkie. Richard Barthelmess portrays Sam Lee, a Chinese-American who, stung by racial slurs, leaves his wealthy father’s New York home to make his own way in Europe. There he falls for a beauty (Constance Bennett) who proves beauty is only skin deep when she discovers Sam’s heritage and vents her fury in a shocking, not-to-be-missed scene of pure racial hatred. A bold look at intolerance that helped secure Warner Bros. studio’s reputation for social-conscience filmmaking, Son of the Gods was also a reprise of sorts for Barthelmess: He played a Chinese opposite Lillian Gish in D.W. Griffith’s famed Broken Blossoms. |

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (DVD) (Commemorative Amaray) $9.95 A masterpiece of mood and heroics, this second film in director John Ford’s renowned cavalry trilogy (Fort Apache and Rio Grande are the others) features one of John Wayne’s most moving performances as a cavalry officer in his final week of service on the frontier. The ritual of outpost life, the sweep of battle, the advance of the patrol beneath ominous skies: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, an Academy Award winner* for its color cinematography, paints a memorable portrait of the honor, duty and courage in the finest tradition of the cavalry. And of Ford filmmaking. |

Tale of Two Cities, A (1935) (DVD) $18.95 “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times….” Charles Dickens’ tale of love and tumult during the French Revolution comes to the screen in a sumptuous film version by the producer famed for nurturing sprawling literary works: David O. Selznick (David Copperfield, Anna Karenina, Gone with the Wind). Ronald Colman (The Prisoner of Zenda) stars as Sydney Carton ? sardonic, dissolute, a wastrel…and destined to redeem himself in an act of courageous sacrifice. “It’s a far, far better thing I do than I’ve ever done,” Carton muses at that defining moment. This is far, far better filmmaking, too: a Golden Era marvel of uncanny performances top to bottom, eye-filling crowd scenes (the storming of the Bastille, thronged courtrooms, an eerie festival of public execution) and lasting emotional power. Revolution is in the air! |

Rain People, The (DVD) $19.95 Unsure of herself, two months pregnant and feeling trapped, Natalie Ravenna leaves her sleeping husband a note and drives away from her Long Island home one rainy morning to find herself. Natalie is the heroine of Francis Ford Coppola’s intensely moving The Rain People. Ahead of its time from both filmmaking and feminist points of view, the film took Coppola and his eight-vehicle crew through 18 sattes, lending this poignant tale a realistic rootless tone. On board were three actors who brought a searing truth to the project: Shirley Knight as Natalie and future stars of The Godfather James Caan and Robert Duvall as the lonely men who bring tenderness and tragedy Natalie’s way. What they and Coppola brought our way is a movie that still touches us a generation later. |

Departed, The: Special Edition (Dbl DVD) (WS) $22.95 Rookie cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) grew up in crime. That makes him the perfect mole, the man on the inside of the mob run by boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). It’s his job to win Costello’s trust and help his detective handlers (Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen) bring Costello down. Meanwhile, SIU officer Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) has everyone’s trust. No one suspects he’s Costello’s mole. How these covert lives cross, double-cross and collide is at the ferocious core of the widely acclaimed The Departed. Martin Scorsese directs, guiding a cast for the ages in a visceral tale of crime and consequences. This is searing, can’t-look-away filmmaking: like staring into the eyes of a con – or a cop – with a gun. |

Alex in Wonderland (Remastered) $19.95 Alex (Donald Sutherland) is the hottest commodity in Hollywood, a first-time director who’s completed an unreleased but buzzed-about movie. Opportunity doesn’t knock, it hammers. Alex and his wife (Ellen Burstyn) can buy a big home (which one?). He can lunch with a big producer (the producer pitches him). He can dream big (and in outlandish reveries, he does). The only thing Alex can’t do is decide what he’ll film next. After Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice put them on everyone’s Rolodex, the filmmaking duo of Paul Mazursky and Larry Tucker created this far-out exploration of Alex’s quandary that’s both Felliniesque homage and, fascinatingly so today, a time capsule of Hollywood’s take on the values of the ’60s. SPECIAL FEATURE: Commentary by Director/Co-Writer Paul Mazursky |

Yolanda and The Thief $19.95 Fred Astaire gracing an imaginative, surreal 16-minute ballet with his wit and unerring dance mastery; a jazzy, glorious-in-Technicolor® street carnival pulsing with movement and music; director Vincente Minnelli’s lush, savvy sophistication evident in every scene – these elements highlight Yolanda and the Thief, a ravishingly beautiful fantasy about a con artist (Astaire) in a mythical Latin American country who convinces a naive heiress (Lucille Bremer) that he’s her guardian angel. It’s a perfect plot to fleece the winsome mark, until love gets other ideas. Ahead of its time in tone and visual style and largely underappreciated at its release, this musical is a real find for fans of bold, inventive filmmaking. |

Confessions of a Nazi Spy (DVD) $19.95 In the wake of a trial that convicted four Nazi agents of spying against the U.S., Warner Bros. became the first Hollywood studio to fire a salvo at Hitler’s Germany. Months before World War II erupted it released this thriller based on revelations that emerged from the trial and other real-life sources. The story is a brisk connect-the-dots tale that ties German-American Bund operatives (Francis Lederer, George Sanders and Paul Lukas among others) to Berlin. Chief among those connecting the dots: FBI Agent Edward Renard (Edward G. Robinson). The drama wasn’t limited to the screen. Production personnel received threats and violence erupted at some screenings. Directed with hard-hitting verve by Anatole Litvak, Confessions of a Nazi Spy struck a nerve in its era. It remains a milestone of filmmaking commitment today. |

Rebels on the Backlot $4.99 The 1990s saw a shock wave of dynamic new directing talent that took the Hollywood studio system by storm. At the forefront of that movement were six innovative and daring directors whose films pushed the boundaries of moviemaking and announced to the world that something exciting was happening in Hollywood, even as much of the industry was mired in mediocrity. With their movies, these directors let the movie-making establishment know that there was a new vanguard ready to take over from the previous generation, and that they were ready to shatter the accepted constraints of filmmaking to do it. Their films toyed with form and narrative, shocked with their sex and violence, and dizzied audiences with surreal themes and images. In making their films, the rebel directors fought their way through a studio system that by the 1990s had become part of America’s larger corporate culture, conglomerates brutally focused on the bottom line and not inclined to take artistic risks. |

Barry Flanagan: Early Works, 1965-1982 $32.5 “>Barry Flanagan (1941-2009) is best known for his bronze hare sculptures that sit, walk, or leap in museums and public spaces around the world. The success of these and other animal sculptures relatively late in his career has obscured his earlier period, which included work made in a variety of media, including cloth, plaster, and rope. Focusing on the artist’s studio practice, this book brings together works made between 1964 and 1982, reevaluating Flanagan’s position as a key figure in modern sculpture. At the same time, the authors investigate Flanagan’s engagement with literature, poetry, filmmaking, dance, magazine publication, and “pataphysics,” the pseudo-science derived from the writings of Alfred Jarry, examining how each discipline inspired the others.” |

Cinema and Fascism By Ricci, Steven $46.28 This study considers Italian filmmaking during the Fascist era and offers an original and revealing approach to the interwar years. Steven Ricci directly confronts a longstanding dilemma faced by cultural historians: while made during a period of totalitarian government, these films are neither propagandistic nor openly Fascist. Instead, the Italian Fascist regime attempted to build ideological consensus by erasing markers of class and regional difference and by circulating terms for an imaginary national identity. Cinema and Fascism investigates the complex relationship between the totalitarian regime and Italian cinema. It looks at the films themselves, the industry, and the role of cinema in daily life, and offers new insights into this important but neglected period in cinema history. Book cover. The Science of Sleep (2006) DVD $6.95 The French magician and director Georges Méliès was arguably the first master of special effects, filling the silent movie houses of the early 20th century with camera trickery that stunned and delighted audiences. A century later, Michel Gondry works very much in the spirit of his artistic predecessor and countryman, creating films and music videos that feel just as hand-crafted and visually fantastical. The Science of Sleep concerns the flirtations and misunderstandings of Stéphane (Gael GarcÃa Bernal, Babel), an aspiring visual artist, and Stéphanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg, 21 Grams), his Parisian neighbor who creates whimsical sculptures from cotton balls and felt. As Stéphane toils in a caustic office for a company that makes calendars, he retreats into his dreams and finds them increasingly hard to distinguish from reality, and vice-versa. The Science of Sleep is a trilingual film, with dialogue spoken in French, English, and Spanish by characters who are very much global citizens, crossing boundaries of consciousness as easily as they cross boundaries of culture. Gondry decorates his love story with deliberately low-tech special effects, including cellophane made to look like bath water and a subconscious television studio constructed largely of corrugated cardboard. This is filmmaking with all the seams and stitches exposed, an appreciation for the patent falseness of films that nonetheless transport and enchant us. It’s dreamy. |

The Edge of Ruin $4.99 During the very early days of silent movies, a murder during filming threatens the lives of two independent film producers in this thrilling historical mystery. One day in 1909, Emily WeissÂ’s handsome and successful new husband, Adam, returns to their well-appointed Philadelphia home to tell her heÂ’s sold everything they own, and they are going to New York to become independent movie producers. As heÂ’s already signed a contract that will ruin them if not fulfilled, Emily agrees to go with him to New York and help him set up their movie company. But of course, itÂ’s not that easy – all movie production is controlled by Thomas Edison and his partners in the Patent Trust who hold many of the major patents used in filmmaking. And they employ a team of often brutal detectives whose main job it is to go around and disrupt independent films, breaking cameras and even heads if necessary. With a colorful crew of actors, Adam and Emily head to Fort Lee, New Jersey where they set shooting the films to fulfill their contract. After evading EdisonÂ’s detectives a couple of times, one of them arrives on the set in time for a major crowd scene. And, while almost everyoneÂ’s back is turned, he is murdered. Now Adam sits in jail, charged with the crime, while Emily has to not only finish films but uncover the truth about the shocking murder. |

Moreover, and as expected from Haneke, 71 Fragments closes with an unforgettable cinematic punch, which also stands as a presage of his later masterpieces by virtue of both its style and thematic core (Adam Bingham, Senses of Cinema). |

A Distant Technology: The Science Fiction Film in the Machine Age $3.65 The Machine Age, roughly delineated by the two decades between World Wars, was a watershed period during which modern society entered into an ambiguous embrace with technology that continues today. J. P. Telotte carefully blends film, technology, cultural, and genre studies to illuminate this nearly forgotten era in our cinematic history and to show, through analysis of classics like The Invisible Ray, Metropolis, and Things to Come, how technology played a major role as motif, actor, and producer. What he also discovers as he ranges among the American, British, Russian, French, and German science fiction cinema — as well as mainstream films, figures, and cultural products such as the New York World’s Fair — is a fundamental ambivalence, embedded in the films themselves, about the very machine-age ethos they promoted. Even as advances in the technical apparatus of filmmaking elevated it from mere entertainment to a medium of general communication and genuine artistic expression, Machine Age science fiction films remained curiously distant from and often skeptical of the very machines on which their narratives focus. The resulting tensions, Telotte writes, thus seem to intersect with those implicit in a Western world that was struggling with its own transition into the modern, rendering the films’ task inevitably paradoxical and difficult |

A History of the French New Wave Cinema $26.95 The French New Wave cinema is arguably the most fascinating of all film movements, famous for its exuberance, daring, and avant-garde techniques. A History of the French New Wave Cinema offers a fresh look at the social, economic, and aesthetic mechanisms that shaped French film in the 1950s, as well as detailed studies of the most important New Wave movies of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Richard Neupert first tracks the precursors to New Wave cinema, showing how they provided blueprints for those who would follow. He then demonstrates that it was a core group of critics-turned-directors from the magazine Cahiers du Cin ma especially Fran ois Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, and Jean-Luc Godard who really revealed that filmmaking was changing forever. Later, their cohorts Eric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette, Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, and Pierre Kast continued in their own unique ways to expand the range and depth of the New Wave. In an exciting new chapter, Neupert explores the subgroup of French film practice known as the Left Bank Group, which included directors such as Alain Resnais and Agn s Varda. With the addition of this new material and an updated conclusion, Neupert presents a comprehensive review of the stunning variety of movies to come out of this important era in filmmaking. |

Richard Neupert first tracks the precursors to New Wave cinema, showing how they provided blueprints for those who would follow. Jean-Pierre Melville, Alexandre Astruc, and the young Agnes Varda all offered valuable narrative lessons and cheap production models. They were followed by Roger Vadim and Louis Malle, whose sexy story lines and lively new narrative strategies helped define a marketable, youthful cinema. But Neupert demonstrates that it was a core group of critics-turned-directors from the magazine Cahiers du Cinema–especially Franois Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, and Jean-Luc Godard–who really revealed that filmmaking was changing forever. Later, their cohorts Eric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette, Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, and Pierre Kast continued in their own unique ways to expand the range and depth of the New Wave. A History of the French New Wave Cinema captures the dramatic impact these films made upon their release, closely examining such famous movies as The 400 Blows (Truffaut, 1959) and Breathless (Godard, 1960), as well as many less-studied films, including La Pointe Courte (Varda, 1955), Paris Belongs to Us (Rivette, 1960), and Le Bel Age (Kast, 1964). |

A Line Of Sight $23.75 For three decades, Paul Arthur has been a leading observer and critic as well as a direct participant in America’s avant-garde cinema. In A Line of Sight, he provides a sweeping new account of the extravagant energies of American experimental cinema since 1965. Balancing close analysis of both major and lesser-known films with detailed examinations of their production, distribution, and exhibition, Arthur addresses the avant-garde’s cultural significance while offering a timely reconsideration of accepted critical categories and artistic options. Rather than treating American avant-garde cinema as a series of successive artistic breakthroughs, A Line of Sight emphasizes the importance of social and institutional networks, material exchanges, and historical disruptions and continuities. Throughout, Arthur pays close attention to themes and visual practices neglected or underrepresented in previous studies, scrutinizing portraiture as a vehicle for projecting dissident identities, highlighting the essay film and the contemporary city symphony, and assessing the contributions of regional and African American filmmaking to the avant-garde. He also explores thematic and formal questions that have been central to the avant-garde achievement: experimental film’s relationship with mainstream narrative cinema and postwar American painting as well as the legacy of sixties’ counterculture; the uses and theoretical implications of found footage and the allegorizing of technology; and the schism between a poetic, expressive cinema and the antisubjective, rationalist bias of structural filmmaking. Amid the current resurgence of experimental filmmakers and the emergence of a new audience for theirwork, A Line of Sight reaffirms the extraordinary breadth and diversity of the avant-garde tradition in America. |

A Third Face – My Tale of Writing, Fighting and Filmmaking – Applause Books $18.95 Winner of Best Non-Fiction for 2002 Award from the Los Angeles Times Book Review! Samuel Fuller was one of the most prolific and independent writer-director-producers in Hollywood. His 29 tough, gritty films made from 1949 to 1989 set out to capture the truth of war, racism and human frailties, and incorporate some of his own experiences. His film Park Row was inspired by his years in the New York newspaper business, where his beat included murders, suicides, state executions and race riots. He writes about hitchhiking across the country at the height of the Great Depression. His years in the army in World War II are captured in his hugely successful pictures The Big Red One, The Steel Helmet and Merrill’s Marauders. Fuller’s other films include Pickup on South Street; Underworld U.S.A., a movie that shows how gangsters in the 1960s were seen as respected tax-paying executives; Shock Corridor, which exposed the conditions in mental institutions; and White Dog, written in collaboration with Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential), a film so controversial that Paramount’s then studio heads Jeffrey Katzenberg and Michael Eisner refused to release it. |

Action Speaks Louder $87.67 For more than 30 years, the action movie has been the film genre that most represents Hollywood to the world, and represents the world to American audiences. Still, the action film has never received the critical attention it deserves. Studying its various trends and visual excesses, Action Speaks Louder: Violence, Spectacle, and the American Action Movie traces the genre’s evolution and sources to reveal how it has come to assume its place of prominence in American identity and American life. With scores of in-depth case studies–including films such as Dirty Harry, Death Wish, RoboCop, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Armageddon, and Spider-Man–author Eric Lichtenfeld draws on film analysis, production histories, critical responses, studio marketing, original filmmaker interviews, and considerations of the genre’s weaponry itself. In this genre, myth, history, culture, and entertainment combine with changing vogues in filmmaking technique to create a category of films known for its excess, its violence, and above all, a very primal form of fun at the movies. |
