Blow’n Chunks $13.99 If not quite as rarity-collecting as the brilliant Sex Bomb Baby overview, Blow’n Chunks is still actually a great place for a Flipper newcomer to begin. Taking from a show at CBGB’s in late 1983, Blow’n finds the band smashing and crashing through a combination of older and newer numbers both, including some that had yet to be officially recorded. The sound quality is good without being too pristine — something about Flipper, at least back then, seems to resist a clean recording as being disruptive of the thick flow of sludge created. What’s especially interesting in the light of history is that no matter how many bands from Seattle in particular claim Flipper as an influence, the quartet themselves never sounds like slow, dire grunge. Tracks like “Way of the World,” “In Life My Friend,” and “Shed No Tears” keep all the strong, lumbering energy familiar from the studio versions, sounding practically quick and speedy, even while the feedback walls and bass trudges set the way. Those numbers that are actually slow, like “The Lights, the Sound, the Rhythm, the Noise” and “Life Is Cheap” definitely betray the Black Sabbath influence long credited to the band, but with an economy that group seemed to lose somewhere along the way (if it ever had it). Both Lose and Shatter bark and scream out their vocals, and for all the implicit drama they never sound like they’re putting on an act — it’s all natural, fitting right in with the powerful music. Fun examples of humor: quick snippets that appeared at the ends of the separate sides on the original tape release, with dogs barking and the band urging the listener to either “turn the tape over!” or to realize “it’s finished!” Bio notes from the band and critic Michael Goldberg make for good liner info as well. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi

Blue Lights on the Runway $16.98 Established fans of this scrappy Irish quartet may be startled by the band’s slight turn toward electronica on its fourth studio album, but there’s no need to fear: the focus is still on bittersweet melody and whimsical lyrics. Lines like “Bring your canary, bring your flame” and “I’d say life’s a different story when you’re facing certain death” and entire songs like the snotty, raunchy “One Stringed Harp” offer an interesting counterbalance to what are often delicately beautiful arrangements and tunes; on “The Great Defector” a slightly off-kilter verse slides into a startlingly simple and lovely hook in the chorus, all the while flirting with a ska beat. (It also features the couplet “You’re the chocolate at the end of my cornetto/I love the way your underwire bra sets off that X-ray machine.”) “Blow Ins” is subtly lounge-flavored until the gentle vocals come in and change the whole mood; “Breastfed,” oddly enough, is written in 7/4. If you’re looking for more cowbell, then try the relatively rockish “A Better Band,” and if you’re looking for less melody, try the weirdly tuneless “How Your Heart Is Wired.” Blue Lights on the Runway is one of those rare albums that you can pretend to like for its alt-credibility while secretly just enjoying it for the hooks. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi

City Lights $11.99 After the release of Mardi Gras in 1975, Dr. John (aka Mac Rebennack) left Atlantic Records. In late 1977, he signed with A&M’s Horizon imprint — a label whose purpose was to showcase the jazz side of its parent company. City Lights is the better of two recordings he cut there. Produced by Tommy LiPuma and Hugh McCracken, City Lights was recorded at New York’s Hit Factory Studios with a band of studio aces: drummer Steve Gadd, guitarists Cornell Dupree and John Tropea, bassist Will Lee, and Richard Tee as an additional keyboardist; Arthur Jenkins added percussive effects. The five-piece horn section included both David Sanborn and Ronnie Cuber. What’s really startling, however, is the material. For most of the 1970s, Rebennack had been playing well-known tunes by other Crescent City luminaries and pop songwriters, contributing precious little of his material to his albums. On City Lights he wrote or co-wrote everything on the set. His songwriting partner for part of this date was none other than Doc Pomus. The best of both men is captured on the opener, “Dance the Night Away with You,” a strolling New Orleans R&B number. Pomus’ words are wrapped in beautiful romantic fantasies of late nights, the magic of city streets, and the acknowledgement between lovers that they are the only people in the world. Rebennack’s music is filled with plinking upright piano, a killer horn chart, a languid pace, and some background effects that reinforce the song’s imagery. Rebennack’s own funky “Snake Eyes” is another killer on the set, even as it’s set somewhere between a pulsing bossa rhythm and an uptown blues tune. When the good doctor begins his low growling moan on the vocal, it all comes together with phase-shifted Steely Dan-style slippery guitars, impressionistic synths, rimshot snares, and that trademark piano that is always in the cut. Even moodier is his “Rain,” a beautiful slow jazz ballad with great support from George Young’s tenor saxophone filling the tags, …

Decades Rock Live: Bonnie Raitt and Friends [DVD/CD] $24.98 Would that this package were the other way around, but Bonnie Raitt and Friends is a DVD/CD project. The DVD contains an entire set recorded at the Trump Taj Mahal from 2005. Raitt, guitar goddess that she is and overall phenomenal spiritual presence on-stage, is joined by friends Alison Krauss, Ben Harper, Keb’ Mo’, and Norah Jones for two songs each, while all the while ripping through her own spirited and inspiring repertoire. The CD contains half the guest performances and most of Raitt’s own show. For those who are not big music DVD fans, the entirety of the concert would have been wonderful on CD — that’s a hint, Capitol! What’s really exciting about the show — either way you catch it — is that the edges in Raitt’s voice that have been there from the beginning of her long and celebrated career, which are so often rounded off on her studio records, are present here, adding to her entirely soulful manner of phrasing and singing (being a song stylist is something she is rarely given credit for). Tracks like “Crooked Crown,” “God Was in the Water,” “Hear Me Lord,” and “Trinkets” are deeply moving. Of her guest performances, “I Don’t Want Anything to Change” with Norah Jones is stellar, as is “Unnecessary Mercenary” with funky-as-hell keyboardist Jon Cleary and “Two Lights in the Nighttime” with Ben Harper (all three appear on both discs). But Raitt shines best on her own; she needs no one and never has. There’s plenty here to like, and some of it even to celebrate, but fans will have to pick their own moments. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
