The Making of a Legend: Gone With the Wind (DVD) $9.95 Traces the filming of the imperishable classic Gone with the Wind, from its inception to its triumphant Atlanta premiere in December of 1939. Filmmaker David Hinton interviews as many survivors of the experience as he’s able to round up, but the main attraction of this film is its precious “test” clips. We watch a montage of screen tests of the many actresses considered for the role of Scarlett O’Hara, ranging from such front-runners as Paulette Goddard to such not-a-chancers as Lana Turner. The Goddard footage is particularly enjoyable as we watch her eagerly reciting the lines of all the characters as she auditions for Scarlett. The documentary also turns up several tantalizing bits of trivia, notably the fact that the film was shown to a preview audience with an entirely different musical score (portions of which are played on the soundtrack). There is, of course, very little suspense involved in Making of a Legend, but even those who’ve heard all the Gone With the Wind factoids from other sources will watch in fascination as the saga unfolds. This documentary was produced by David Selznick’s sons, and written by iconoclastic movie historian David Thomson. |

Making Supper Safe By Hewitt, Ben $30.86 A fascinating examination of food safety in the United States how it works, what happens when it fails, and how we can learn to trust our food again. Food recalls have become so ubiquitous we hardly even notice them. The massive peanut salmonella contamination of 20082009 alone killed nine and sickened an estimated 22,500 people; only a few weeks later, contaminated frozen cookie dough sent 35 people to the hospital. These tragic, inexcusable events to which no one is immune are but a symptom of a broader food system malaise. In Making Supper Safe, Ben Hewitt exposes the vulnerabilities inherent to the US food industry, where the majority of our processing facilities are inspected only once every seven years, and where government agencies lack the necessary resources to act on early warning signs. The most dangerous aspect of our food system isnt just its potential to make us acutely ill, but the ever expanding distance between us and our sources of nourishment. Hewitt introduces a vibrant cast of characters and revolutionaries who are reinventing how we grow, process, package, distribute, and protect our food, and even how we protect ourselves. He takes readers inside a food contamination trace back investigation, goes dumpster diving, and talks to lawyers, policy makers, and families who have been affected by contaminated food. Making Supper Safe explains why we should worry, but it is also a quest to understand how we can learn to trust our food again Author: Hewitt, Ben Subtitle: One Mans Quest to Learn the Truth About Food Safety Publication Date: 2011/06/07 Number of Pages: 282 Binding Type: Hardcover Language: English Depth: 1.25 Width: 5.75 Height: 8.75 |

A Room for Learning: The Making of a School in Vermont $7.99 In this stirring account of a teacher and his fourteen students tucked away in the Green Mountains of Vermont, educator Tal Birdsey fervently documents the founding year of his small junior high school with wit and humility. Part memoir, part meditation on the power of art and poetry, and part criticism of standardized education, A Room for Learning evokes a spirit of change, in which students were allowed a hand in their own education. With no set curriculum, no prior history, and limited resources, the students delve deep into the poetry of Yeats and Bukowski, the music of Coltrane, the art of Caravaggio, and the emotional landscape of Elie WieselÂ’s “Night”, with each student learning to offer his or her own personal insights. But they also take time out, to be outside amidst the pinecones and fresh air, to be the kids that they still sometimes are and to learn from one another. Isolated from mainstream culture and constantly on the brink of apathy, this diverse group of kids and a teacher created a literary community and celebrated learning and themselves. A Room for Learning is the poignant true story of how one small school demonstrated that a classroom can be a place of transformative power. |

Alice in Wonderland $19.99 Based on the Walt Disney feature film directed by Tim Burton, Alice in Wonderland for PC follows the story of 19-year-old Alice, who returns down the rabbit hole to the magical land she visited as a child but has since forgotten. The action-adventure game features exploration and light combat, with an RPG-like system that allows Alice to learn new fighting moves and gain additional power and abilities as she conquers challenges and progresses through the story. In some levels, gamers can also play as Alice’s Wonderland allies, including the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, and others, making use of each character’s distinct abilities in combat or exploration. As in the original Lewis Carroll stories, things are seldom what they first appear to be in Wonderland, and some of the game’s most challenging puzzles involve optical illusions and other tricky visuals. As in the movie, the story proceeds through hazardous conflicts against the Red Queen’s sniveling minions, and culminates in a snicker-snacking battle with the biting, catching Jabberwock. ~ T.J. Have Fries – Will Travel!: The Adventures of a Veggie-Powered Car and an Eco-Rap Star $1.36 Have Fries-Will Travel! is an adventure story for children of all ages. It features Rock, an eco-rap singer, who buys Tiny, a smelly diesel car, at a used car lot. Rock converts Tiny to run on biodiesel, usually made from soybean oil. Soon, Tiny is powered by biodiesel, his exhaust smelling like yummy French fries. The two set off on a road trip to encourage others to use biodiesel in their cars and to meet Senator Slade Twist in Washington, DC. They visit farmers growing soybeans especially for making biodiesel; they pick up a colorful assortment of biodiesel converts, including the one and only Ms. Liza Merriweather; Rock performs rap songs about the need to stop global warming-with biodiesel cars being a good idea since biodiesel is a very clean fuel; and a parade of vehicles, including a biodiesel-fueled farm tractor and a big rig, follow Tiny into DC where a surprise ending awaits. Children learn that using French fry oil for running vehicles helps the environment. They also learn specific ways to promote biodiesel-from encouraging mom and dad, to rallying their school and community leaders, to getting trucks and buses converted to biodiesel. With an introduction by film star/activist Daryl Hannah and Grassolean Solutions founder Charris Ford-who use and promote biodiesel themselves-the book will find a home among teachers, parents, environmental organizations, and a wide range of others. Linda K. Hempel is an environmental entrepreneur and educator who has spent over two decades teaching the public about caring for, restoring, and preserving the environment. If It’s Purple, Someone’s Gonna Die $39.95 If it’s Purple, Someone’s Gonna Die is a must-read book for all film students, film professionals, and others interested in filmmaking. This enlightening book guides filmmakers toward making the right color selections for their films, and helps movie buffs understand why they feel the way they do while watching movies that incorporate certain colors. Guided by her twenty-five years of research on the effects of color on behavior, Bellantoni has grouped more than 60 films under the spheres of influence of six major colors, each of which triggers very specific emotional states. For example, the author explains that films with a dominant red influence have themes and characters that are powerful, lusty, defiant, anxious, angry, or romantic and discusses specific films as examples. She explores each film, describing how, why, and where a color influences emotions, both in the characters on screen and in the audience. Each color section begins with an illustrated Home Page that includes examples, anecdotes, and tips for using or avoiding that particular color. Conversations with the author’s colleagues– including award-winning production designers Henry Bumstead (Unforgiven) and Wynn Thomas (Malcolm X) and renowned cinematographers Roger Deakins (The Shawshank Redemption) and Edward Lachman (Far From Heaven)–reveal how color is often used to communicate what is not said. Bellantoni uses her research and experience to demonstrate how powerful color can be and to increase readers awareness of the colors around us and how they make us feel, act, and react. *Learn how your choice of color can influence an audience’s moods, attitudes, reactions, and interpretations of yourmovie’s plot*See your favorite films in a new light as the author points out important uses of color, both instinctive and intentional*Learn how to make good color choices, in your film and in your world. *Learn how your choice of color can influence an audience’s moods, attitud |

Making It Big $25 How does one of Broadway’s most anticipated musicals end up folding its tent after just six months and with a potential loss of more than $10 million? In Barbara Isenberg’s behind-the-scenes account, readers follow step by step as Big, the musical struggles against nearly insuperable odds. The long-awaited stage adaptation of the popular Tom Hanks film was not to have an easy journey. Led by the highly-regarded Crazy for You duo of director Mike Ockrent and choreographer Susan Stroman, the show’s cast and crew had some very bad luck heading for Broadway with one of the most expensive, high-profile musicals in recent history. In this authoritative, insightful and readable journal, we go backstage as the $10.3 million production is cast, rewritten, rehearsed and performed, first in Detroit, then in New York. Doors are opened to high pressure rehearsals, passionate advertising debates, stern budget talks and endless rewrite sessions in out-of-town hotel rooms. Day by day diary entries report the high hopes and deep disappointments of Ockrent, Stroman, producer James Freydberg, playwright John Weidman, composer David Shire and lyricist Richard Maltby, Jr., as they take on blizzards, set glitches, indifferent audiences, even a convention of witches at their Detroit hotel. Maltby and Shire turn out 58 songs, leading lady Crista Moore has to learn 5 different opening ballads and leading man Daniel Jenkins has knee surgery just weeks before opening night. Postponed from fall, 1995, to spring, 1996, Big was pilloried in Detroit, then substantially reworked for Broadway. But by the time it arrived, Broadway had changed even more than it had. From the minimal competition expected at the start ofits odyssey, Big faced and was shunted aside by two of the most innovative and critically successful musicals of recent memory, Rent and Bring in ‘de Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk. Big became not an instant classic, but in the words of Julie Andrews about her own show, Victor/Victoria, egre |

Murder a La Mod/Moving Finger $9.98 Lost horror from Brian De Palma! Love-starved Karen is startled to learn that her boyfriend Christopher earns a living making nudie movies with a creep named Otto (the always odd William Finley). Believing Christopher is only in the skinflick scene to make enough money to divorce his wife, Karen steals some cash for him but, while attempting to deliver it, is attacked by Otto and his ice pick… To reveal more would spoil things except to note that Murder a la Mod culminates in a surprisingly gory murder that not only echoes Psycho but anticipates snuff films as well. Brian De Palma’s directorial debut is a witty, bloody, funny, cynical and downright nasty little gem that, until now, has remained maddeningly impossible to see since its theatrical release in 1968 (where it played a single New York theater). Full of the same gritty vibe as his Greetings and Sisters, Murder a la Mod is De Palma at his most De Mented!Plus: $90,000 in stolen cash shakes up a bunch of grubby bohemians when they discover a wounded bank robber hiding in the basement of a beatnik coffee house run by a phony poet (gravelly-voiced Lionel Stander) in The Moving Finger, a theatrically unreleased art house/exploitation film about Greenwich Village lowlifes that perfectly captures the hazy twilight of the Fifties beat scene: The bus tourists are in! Start looking decadent! System Requirements:Running Time: 80 MinutesFormat: DVD MOVIE |

Nanny McPhee [WS] $14.98 A nanny reveals ways of making children behave that are much more effective than a time-out in this fantasy comedy based on the “Nurse Matilda” books for children by Christianna Brand. Near the dawn of the twentieth century, Mr. Brown (Colin Firth) is a widower who must tend to his business as an undertaker while looking after his brood of seven children. Brown’s offspring are a singularly ill-mannered lot who have managed to drive away 17 different nannies when their father arranges for one Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) to help out with the children. McPhee is an strange looking woman with a large nose, protruding teeth, and pock-marked skin, but it isn’t long before the kids realize she has magical powers and isn’t afraid to use them to help keep them in line. While the children aren’t taken with McPhee’s insistence on such things as saying “please” and listening to their elders, it becomes clear everyone has bigger things to worry about. Aunt Adelaide (Angela Lansbury) has insisted that if Mr. Brown cannot find a new wife within a month, she’ll take custody of one of the children and cut off Brown’s inheritance, and while Brown and the widow Mrs. Quickly (Celia Imrie) seem fond of one another, his ineptitude in courtship seems to insure he’ll never get her to the altar. But while the Brown Children realize Nanny McPhee is a formidable opponent, she can also be a valuable ally as they learn to make use of her talents by being better children; they also discover that as they behave better, she begins to look less frightening. Emma Thompson, who played the title role in Nanny McPhee, also wrote the film’s screenplay. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
